For me, Monday the 13th has more reason to be cursed than Friday. I’m always sweatin’ the details on Monday, looking forward to a week of putting out fire after fire, and worrying about the next big calamity to strike. I’m not wanting a Monday right now, especially after my bizarre, strange, crazy and otherwise delightful weekend I’ve just had: It falls into the category of spectral, I mean hitting opposite ends of my reality spectrum. One minute I’m decked out for the opera in a brocade designer dress with thigh-high nylons that keep slipping down, and the next I’m in my favorite plaid Lumberjack shirt serving homemade chili from a cast-iron pot at the cabin. |

As a struggling artist, performing at weddings, sad funerals (is there any other kind?), the occasional luncheon, and on every other blue moon a full-blown orchestra concert, I have finally found my niche as a "SOCIAL BUTTERFLY." |

Margaret Houlton has been working with several Arts organizations in the Twin Cities area for years, helping to raise as much as $30,000 at a time through Benefit Events, Live and Silent Auctions, Luncheons, and Dinners. Ms. Houlton employs the talents of local chefs and performing artists to bring these successful campaigns to organizations like Mississippi Valley Orchestra, Minnesota Dance Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and more. Margaret Houlton, soprano, has performed solo work with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Plymouth Music Series, Kenwood Symphony, Mississippi Valley Orchestra, University of Minnesota Opera Theater, Minnesota Opera Outreach Program, Thursday Musical, and Philomusica of Minnesota. She placed first in Minnesota scholarship competitions held by the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Schubert Club, Voices of Vienna, and Scheussler School of Music, and in 1996 she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions. Opera roles include Micaela in Carmen, Nannetta in Falstaff, Meg in Ballad of Baby Doe, Amor in Orfeo et Euridice, Moppet in Paul Bunyan, and Cathleen in Riders to the Sea. Ms. Houlton graduated from St. Olaf College with a Bachelor of Arts and holds a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Minnesota. Ms. Houlton now acts as a board member of Twin Cities Opera Guild and Mississippi Valley Orchestra, as well as Vice President of A and R Pistachios, and lives in Edina with her husband Andrew, son Joseph, and daughter Elizabeth. |
